With Joe having trusted Christ through his local church’s bus ministry and Melissa having trusted Christ while growing up as a missionary kid on the mission field, God brought Joe and Melissa Marshall together while attending Crown College in Powell, TN. After graduating in 1999, the Marshalls joined Baptist International Missions, Inc., and transitioned to full-time deputation in June 2000 after Joe finished up his Master’s in Ministry degree (Joe would later go on to complete his Doctorate in Theology degree in 2006).
After arriving in Australia in November 2003, their first year was spent serving with Great Hope Baptist Church in Inala, Queensland, helping them to establish their youth ministry, young adult ministry, choir, and Bible Institute. Dr. and Mrs. Marshall’s ministry heart is to plant Australian independent Bible-believing Baptist Churches and to train national leadership to do the same.
In October 2004, the Marshalls were able to plant the Gateway Baptist Church in the city of Darwin which is the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia having over 130,000 people consisting of over 70 ethnic backgrounds. During their 8 years at Gateway, Joe and Melissa were able to sponsor Missionary Dan Delong and assist in the planting of Coastline Baptist Church in Cairns, Queensland, as well as help start a Bible study in Katherine, Northern Territory, which eventually formed into the Savannah Way Baptist Church.
In December 2012, the Marshalls saw God move their family to Brisbane to minister at Good Shepherd Baptist Church assisting Pastor Nathan Lloyd in his desire of church planting. While serving at Good Shepherd, God brought the Marshall and Avenell families together to start the New Beginnings Baptist Church. Since its July 2014 launch, New Beginnings has seen steady growth with over 156 first time visitors and strong member participation as 95% of their church is involved in weekly outreach having placed Gospel literature in over 65,000 homes. During 2015, the Marshalls continue to see God do exciting things at New Beginnings as they recently on September 6th had 57 in attendance at their Father’s Day service and on October 25th had their first baptismal service with 2 being baptized! In January 2016, they chartered the church and also launched their Sunday pm services, and in July 2016, they conducted their first Brisbane area-wide youth outreach as well as celebrated their church's 2nd anniversary.
Pastor Joe and his wife Melissa have been married since 1998 and have three children – Breanna, Josiah and Kaitlyn. Team Outreach Australia was excited to again partner with the Dr. and Mrs. Marshall in Summer 2017 as we again assisted them in a Brisbane-wide youth and children’s rally as well as ministered at New Beginnings Baptist Church at their 3rd Anniversary service along with Evangelist Scott Pauley. We again look forward in 2018 to ministering to and along with the Marshalls and the folks at New Beginning Baptist Church as they reach their community for Christ!
