The Sutton family (Kyle, Jamie, Rebecca and Jonathan) landed in Sydney, Australia in August, 2001 to begin their evangelistic work among the Jewish people as missionaries with the International Board of Jewish Missions. A year and a half later, David was born into the family. Home to nearly 50,000 Jewish people, they began spreading the gospel of Messiah Jesus over the next eight years. During that time, they established Harbour Baptist Church in the heart of the Jewish community. The Lord moved them south to Melbourne in December, 2009. One year later, they established Friendship Baptist Church on the edge of the 60,000-strong Jewish community. Besides normal church work, they annually conduct a public Passover banquet, and undergo an annual cycle of getting the gospel of Messiah into every Jewish home within the central Jewish community. Mail-outs are also done to Jewish people living beyond this immediate area. The Suttons follow the Biblical principle of taking the gospel “to the Jews first,” yet also labor to take it “to the Gentiles.”
After being in Australia for over 15 years, there have been many opportunities for ministry such as teaching the Bible in public primary schools under the government-sanctioned program called Christian Religious Education. Even though Australians are a hardened people and have a seeming intolerance to the gospel, it is the Suttons’ desire to continue sowing the Good News to as many people possible and in as many ways possible throughout this multicultural society. “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country” (Prov. 25:25).
During summers 2016 and 2017, Team Australia were able to assist the Suttons in passing out Gospel literature to almost 3,000 people and in 2017 had wonderful fellowship and ministered with them in their Sunday am service at Friendship Baptist! Currently, Team Australia continues to minister to the Suttons by ministering to and encouraging their daughter Rebecca as she continues attending Pensacola Christian College. We again look forward in 2018 to ministering to the Suttons and helping to expand their vision for the Jewish community in Melbourne, Australia.
